Hi!
Thank you for this and other games! Don’t stop doing it (if you do like it). :)
I can feel the Tunic vibe from the combat system. Especially with this 3-hit combo. :)
I failed to get past the room with multiple beholder-like creatures. I haven’t found a fancy way to deal with them, so they just screwed me over. :D I wish I could try out the boss battle.
I tried to play test the game and provide some feedback, please don’t look at it as a criticism. I’m sharing my thoughts, you can just ignore them. :)
A few random things that came to my mind while I was playing it:
You can enable the fullscreen mode for the play-in-browser. I think it’s better for the game like this. I would enjoy a Linux native build even more. :D I had some success with running this game using Wine, but the performance is not great.
I would probably enjoy the gamepad controls for this game. Especially since it uses only a few buttons.
I know that it’s not always feasible to add a menu to a game prototype, but sound level options are really useful for video recordings. Most of the time, we want to turn the music down, etc.
Since this game is quite hard for a bad player like me, maybe you can use a trick with giving a losing player more chances after they die for 3 times or more? :D Any bonus would make the player feel more confident, so they keep on trying.
Waypoints or other ways to save the game progress would be handy too. It’s too easy to lose all the health in a single room.
Perhaps add some simple drop for the creeps? I wonder what’s the motivation to kill them right now apart from the ones that clearly block the way. Even if it’s just a coin for a high score or whatever, it’s still more interesting this way, I think. :)
I also struggled with the controls a little bit during the game. You can watch the video if you want more details on that.
The enemies can deal damage without any attack animation. :( It makes it harder to fight them efficiently. When I block and see a “damage blocked” cue, I want to open my guard right away and do a counter attack. Unfortunately, this usually results in me getting hurt. :) I wonder what is the right way to kill these creeps without taking so much damage.
I haven’t found any hidden secrets. Maybe I wasn’t paying too much attention. :) The Tunic gives you a manual filled with various hints, so you can find something even if you’re not a great player. So I don’t know if I missed anything or there were no secrets in that part of the game to begin with. :D
Hey Iskander, thank you so much for such a valuable feedback! I also watched your video and really enjoyed it (especially the encounters with Mimics haha) I was really looking forward for your encounter with the boss, but those pinky Beholders were merciless.
The story behind Violet’s Awakening is that it was developed during two weeks for a video-based Unity course on https://www.dio.me/en (but it’s in Portuguese, as I’m from Brazil). So even though there are indeed many bugs here and there, the main focus was towards teaching how to make a dungeon-crawler, almost roguelike-ish game (which, honestly, is what I love haha), so perhaps my students will pick up these great suggestions you made and implement in their own versions of the game.
I believe the most noticeable bug in the game is that sometimes you hit monsters but they don’t take damage, and that gives the impression they have a lot of health, when in fact they have very little health and are supposed to be easy opponents. I might release an update on this in the future with some improvements and bug fixing!
As for the Tunic-like secrets, perhaps they’re just too secret 😮, so secret that I forgot to include them in the game 😮 But that will be our little secret haha
Anyways, thank you for playing, and I really appreciate the feedback, both here and in your video! Stay tuned for variations of this game as my students reach this point in the course 😁
